Question by Donna C: Gripe water or gas drops to sooth acid reflux in an infant?
99% sure that my newborn is suffering from acid reflux. He has every single symptom. The Dr. put him on some medication a week ago, which is helping slightly, but he’s still crying and suffering most of the time he’s awake. I was wondering if anyone has tried gripe water or gas drops (or anything else that worked) – and was wondering if it helped at all. Please let me know what your experience with these types of products was. Thanks!

Question by *Amanda Leigh*: Infant with Acid Reflux…Suggestions?
My daughter is almost 7 weeks old and has severe acid reflux. So far I’m feeding her smaller meals more frequently, keeping her upright a good amount of the day and night, I changed her formula, took her to the doctor and he gave her Zantac, and I’m thickening her formula with rice cereal. Does anyone else have any other suggestions on how to help soothe and calm reflux in infants?
Please and thank you<3

Infant Acid reflux is an important issue. Infants are often seen spitting up after having their meals. This very common site seen all over the world. It is nothing else but your baby is suffering from acid reflux. Mainly because of the feeding habits infants are more prone to spiting up whatever they consume. With the growing age this reflux level decreases. This can be caused during sneezing, coughing or even when the infant cries. It is caused due to the pressure on the digestive system. As a caring parent certain changes can be made in some of the habits of your infants feeding. The position of holding your infant should be observed while and during feeding, the infant should be kept straight after or in between the feedings, to make him burp to release the gas, should be fed with smaller but repeated meals. Observing these methods will decrease the symptoms and the intensity of the reflux. However if the symptoms still continue a doctor should be consulted.

The cause of infant acid reflux is similar to that of acid reflux in adults. Infants experience the same uncomfortable sensation that an adult experiences with acid reflux. The acids that reflux into the esophagus irritates the baby’s throat, causing them to have excessive spitting up and vomiting. If your baby is experiencing excessive spitting up and/or vomiting, don’t ignore it. If it is acid reflux it could cause your child to be malnutritioned and it could ultimately stunt their growth.
Acid reflux disease occurs when there is a lot of pressure on the baby’s stomach. Overfeeding the infant will cause this pressure. Coughing and crying right after the baby had been fed will also cause pressure in the upper stomach. This pressure causes the stomach acid to be pushed into the baby’s throat.
