Baby acid reflux is a condition that doctors have not yet completely researched and that is often a little misunderstood as well. From recent statistics, one fifth or so of the eight million babies born each year in the US suffer from acid reflux, and babies with handicaps that are developmental or neurological are even more at risk from this condition.

In simple terms, acid reflux, also called GERD (gastro esophageal reflux disease) is a mechanical problem in the digestive system, which can be corrected. In a healthy person, there is a circular muscle acting as a valve at the junction of the stomach and the esophagus (called the lower esophageal sphincter) and stopping stomach acids from flowing back up the esophagus. Acid reflux happens when that sphincter cannot retain the acids in the stomach. These then move into the throat sometimes as far as the larynx. Numerous symptoms can result from acid reflux leading to complications like infections, pain, ulcers, difficulties in eating, vocal disorders and even cancer in the long run.

Question by Leeanne: Why is my baby vomitting does she have acid reflux?
I have been really concerned about my baby. Everytime I breastfeed her she vomits when i try to burp her, a whole lot comes out. When I researched on the internet it says that it could be acid reflux in infants. Please let me know what the doctor will say which we will have her checked out. Thanks.

are they more fussy…My 2 mo old has never spit up; yet dr believes she has silent reflux. I just hate that she has to take meds daily but im willing to do so, if it will make her feel better. My baby cries all day even if I carry her. I have taken her to 4 diff drs 3 said she was just irritable. But she screams…please help

If no home remedies, what has the doctor prescribed
baby is 7 weeks old and is gaining weight just fine..breast feed and am watching all that I eat. Baby cries every waking moment.

Ok, so I have been doing some research about acid reflux in infants and I’m starting to wonder if my daughter could possibly have this. She does have a doctors appointment soon, so I will be asking her pedi. about his. In the mean time, however, I would like some opinions from you mom’s who have been through this. What do you think?

She is always spitting up. I know that she could just be a “spitter”, but I also know that this is one of the main signs of reflux.

What to do when your new born baby throw’s up half of every bottle (being feed every 3 to 4 hours) through her nose and mouth every day of her life…and the doctors diagosis by doctors was “Severe Acid Reflux”.
